Skilled Independent Visa  (Subclass 189 Visa) 

The Skilled Independent Visa is a points-tested stream that invites skilled professionals to live and work in Australia permanently. This visa is for workers who are not sponsored by any territory or employer or a family member living in the country.

The visa makes you eligible to: 

• Live & work anywhere in Australia 
• Become an Australian citizen 
• Enroll in the public healthcare scheme 
• Sponsor skilled family members for PR 

Points Requirement for Skilled Independent Visa :

The application for this visa is by invite only. To receive the invitation, you must: 

• File the Expression of Interest(EOI) document 
• Have experience in an occupation listed in Australia Skilled Occupations List Be less than 45 years of age

• Have sufficient English language skills 
• Satisfy the character and medical conditions and 
• Meet the minimum cut-off score of 65 under the points stream. 

As per the information filled in the EOI, your profile will be awarded points on the criteria as follows: Age, English Skills, Education, and Experience & Partner Skills.

 

Processing Time for Subclass 189 Visa:

You will have sixty days to apply for the visa after receiving the ITA. After applying, the Department of immigration will start processing the application. The average duration for processing the visa is eight months for 75% of applications.

 

Subclass 190 Visa

The skilled nominated visa is for the skilled workforce that Australia requires. The subclass 190 is a point-based visa where the person needs to score at least 65 points. The permanent residency as such is provided once the person gets a skilled nominated subclass by a state Government and meets the eligibility criteria required. 

The eligible skilled occupation holders need to qualify under other categories in order to get a skilled nominated work visa.  The 489 Skilled Regional Visa, popularly known as Subclass 489 visa, is a temporary visa. It allows skilled workers or skilled migrants to work and live in Australia. 

Please remember that subclass 489 has been recently closed by the Australian government. It has been replaced by subclass 491 visa (Skilled Work Regional Provisional Visa Subclass 491) effective from 16 November 2019. 

 

Subclass 489 visa category is specially designed for applicants who possess: skills, abilities, and experience These factors have to be in demand in specified regional areas/territories or some specific states of Australia. 

 

Eligibility requirements of the Subclass 489 Visa 

 

In order to be eligible to apply for a Subclass 489 Provisional Visa in Australia, you must fulfill the following conditions to satisfy the immigration law: 

• Your age has to be under 44 years and Have relevant work experience in any of the nominated occupations in the eligible Skilled Occupation list in Australia. 
• You have to score a minimum of 65 points on the Australia Points Test System designed for immigration. 
• You must possess experience that meets the state or territory requirements. 
• You must have the required level of English Proficiency from IELTS 
• You have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) 
• You need to meet the minimum health and character requirements to get a positive Police Clearance Report 
• You must live in a sponsoring regional area or state for 2 years after the visa is issued 

 

Subclass 491 Visa

This visa is valid for tenure of 5 years. The applicant for this visa has to be either state nominated or sponsored by an eligible family member who is a permanent resident in Australia.

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs Australia, updated the list of occupations. The new list is for the skilled migration program.

• MLTSSL     :  Medium and Long Term Strategic Skill List
• ROL           :  Regional Occupation List
